Benjamin Edelman - I've finished my time at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society and will therefore be publishing future work on this site rather than on the Berkman Center's servers. But old links should remain operational indefinitely, and I'll maintain a single listing of publications that includes my work there as well as subsequent projects.
Despite the change of venue, my substantive interests remain largely the same. In the coming months, look for new articles about Internet filtering (notable developments in Asia and the Middle East), about domain names (evaluation of new gTLDs, and documentation of the controversial practices still used by some registrants), and about pop-up advertising (programs like Gator and WhenU remaining in the spotlight).* 04/25/2004
Counterexploitation - Counterexploitation, a philosophy of recognising and dealing with the myriad commercial, political, etc. forces that make their riches & further their agendas by standing on the backs of the very people they are purportedly here to benefit. Look carefully into your own life, no matter who you are, and you will see the countless instances of man exploiting man. The counterexploitation philosophy is centered around freeing oneself from these exploiters who aim, at every turn, to rob from you a little of your time, a little of your money, a little of your freedom. They range from glaring examples from our past--slavery--to more subtle instances which threaten to be a part of our daily lives, like the street dealer who peddles addictive dope to your children or the companies that make their millions by selling away your privacy, byte by personally-identifying byte.* They also have a great List of Ad Blockers and Pop-Up Stoppers. 05/17/2003
THIS IS A MUST READ!!: Newer versions of Windows Messenger use a new "feature" that allows pop-ups, even when you're not connected to the Internet, and now Advertisers and Hackers are using this to their advantage...Grrr...here's a couple of solutions for removing or disabling Messenger. How to Uninstall Windows Messenger and various versions of Windows Messenger instructions (Scroll Down to the Messenger Heading) and How to Disable Windows Messenger Service Instructions by the University of Virginia. Steve Gibson has a program, Shoot The Messenger, that will automatically remove MS Messenger. Even before the latest DCOM/RPC vulnerability (see above), many Windows users were being annoyed by "pop-up spam" notices appearing on their desktops. This intrusion is also facilitated by an exploitation of port 135. Our free "Shoot The Messenger" utility furthers the security of Windows by quickly and easily shutting down the "Windows Messenger" server that should never have been running by default in the first place.* 10/11/2003

POW! by AnalogX - A simple utility, just run POW! while browsing on the net, and when one of those nasty popups appears, POW! will automatically close it for you... It's that easy! And that's not all... You can configure POW! to close any new popups that you run across, so if it doesn't close them already, you can easily add/remove them at any time. This is an absolute must for anyone who spends any reasonable (or unreasonable) amount of time surfing the web.* 05/17/2003
