Freeware & Shareware Sites

(F = Freeware & $ = Shareware)

John Hood's The Best of Freeware for Business and Productivity - Welcome to the best of business and productivity free software, and the documents  to help you use them.

By free I mean that the software has no spyware, no adware, no “free trial” time limits, no cutesy fluff to clutter your PC and your life.  No kidding.

Some of the best software in the world will cost you nothing.   The trouble is how to find it.  I've been searching free software for years. This pursuit is an issue of equity and justice.  We live in the Information Age, yet there is a large and growing chasm between the people who are the information "haves" and people who are the "have-nots:" People on fixed incomes, the disadvantaged, small business owners.

What is on these pages is the best software I have found that will narrow the gap.  People using these products will be able to compete technologically with those who have the latest payware offerings.

KarenWare.com - A very nice collection of free utilities created by Karen Kenworthy! She also has a great Newsletter.

Keir.net - I write software for a living but in my (increasingly depleted) spare time I enjoy taking programs apart and finding out how they work, writing small utilities for various purposes and improving on other people's work by attempting to write smaller and faster code. This is in contrast to bloatware - the gigantic, unreliable offerings so common in commercial and shareware software these days.* A nice collection of small freeware programs! 09/13/2004

MajorGeeks.com - MajorGeeks is here to help you get the most out of your computer in part by offering tools to the beginner or advanced user (hopefully you someday). Many of the files found here give you a nice interface and even explain things for you in simple terms.* 05/16/2003 F & $

Software Design - Windows Software by Gregory Braun - All of the MS Windows software at this web site is designed and written by Gregory Braun. My software design philosophy is to create small, fast-loading Windows programs and utilities that do one specific thing very well.

The Gazette - Welcome to my limited collection of the very best freeware utils in the known universe. This isn't a comprehensive listing of every freeware item ever made, just the ones I think are worth downloading and using. If it ain't great, it ain't here. The hard work, generosity, imagination and creativity of the authors of the programs posted here are an infinite source of admiration and respect, so it seems only right to share these utilities with all of you. Enjoy!* 05/15/2003

The Portable Freeware Collection - This site is dedicated to the collection and cataloging of Windows freeware that can be extracted to any directory and run independently without prior installation. These can be carried around on a memory stick / USB flash drive, or copied / migrated from PC to PC via simple copying of files. Hence the term portable freeware.

Some freeware already come in the form of a ZIP file, ready to be extracted and run from any directory. Others require an extraction procedure, which could be as simple as installing them, extracting the necessary files, and uninstalling them again.

Unfortunately, not all freeware can be extracted this way. Some freeware still rely on hocus-pocus in their SETUP.EXE (write special registry keys, install nifty COM objects etc.) in order to function properly. These non-portable freeware will not be listed in our database. Hopefully we will see fewer of them in time to come if enough people become concerned about portability.

The Pricelessware List - The Pricelessware list is a compilation of software collected through a yearly vote by the participants of the "alt.comp.freeware" newsgroup. It is a list of what people have voted as "the best of the best in Freeware".

Commercial Software Sites

(I am not an Affiliate of any of these sites)

ServerFiles.com - Welcome to ServerFiles.com (previously 32Bit.com). The site has refocused as a Server software & hardware directory for Network administrators & IT professionals. We list networking & server software for both Windows-based systems, including Windows 2003, Windows 2000 & NT, and also Linux-based systems. We have also begun listing networking hardware solutions. ServerFiles.com is significantly different from other download/software sites in that it does not focus on single user software.* 05/16/2003

BuyCheapSoftware.com has a great selection of software titles that include the full license! I've bought from them several times without any problems!

Pyrogon™ - Entertain your Brain. Pyrogon was founded in 2000 by game industry veteran Brian Hook to pursue a single vision -- have fun making games. In early 2001 he was joined by Rosie Cosgrove, then art director at Sony On-line Entertainment/Verant Interactive, and together they've charted a vision for game development that is risky but, hopefully, also rewarding.* I downloaded their NingPo Mahjong demo for the Wife and we both enjoyed the game well enough that I decided to purchase the full version. This is one of the best Mahjong games we've played and the amount of different games available and the differing degrees of difficulty make this an awesome game to play! There are also quite a few customizable features that make this game very enjoyable. The only complaint I have is that I wish we could disable the "One More Play Remaining" warning. Other than that this game is well worth purchasing especially if you play Mahjong as much as we do. They have versions available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. 03/13/2004
